Create Work Standards to Increase Productivity

Definition of Work Standards:

  1. An agreed upon basis or method of work by which all involved adhere to.
  2. An authorized or approved means of accomplishing a particular task.
  3. An object or objective that is regarded as the usual way or most common form to accomplish a task.

Definition of Productivity:

  1. The rate by which goods or services are provided. For example how many receptacles can be installed by one man in one hour?
  2. It can be expressed as output over input where the output is the number of units produced and the input is the cost of labor and material to produce the given output. If the costs of the inputs remain more or less fixed then, there will be an increase in productivity.

Needs Statement:

There is a definite need to become more productive in today’s highly competitive environment, which means you must look for ways to increase the productivity of your men. This is highly important as the market has a definite limit on what it is willing to pay for any given project. In other words if you want the work you cannot charge what you should according to your present productivity, but increase your productivity to meet the market realities.

There are a number of ways to increase productivity such as:

  1. Finding a niche and limiting your company’s activity to providing goods or services that support the chosen niche.
  2. Lower cost materials.
  3. Training.
  4. Matching the skill of your labor force to the work to be performed.
  5. Creating and enforcing company standards in the means and methods of production. We will limit our discussion to this item.

Developing Company Standards:

Developing standards entails writing a detailed written process control procedure that enumerates every step of the process including the materials used, material handling, the means and methods of installation, health and safety, quality control, the equipment required, who is responsible to direct the work, who is responsible to perform each task required. In part two of this paper we will consider what will be required to develop a standard for installing branch circuit receptacles and provide a sample written process control procedure.

Benefits of Developing Company Standards:

There are many benefits derived when you develop company standards that translate directly to an increase in productivity, among which are:

  1. Less inventory as you only use designated materials.
  2. Worker familiarity with the installations of a limited material set.
  3. Workers are trained with respect to cable entry, terminations, and splices to a company standard.
  4. A worker which follows another’s work instantly recognizes the function of each conductor in a box especially 3way and 4way switching.
